Video games and real life violence.

When did the accusation of violence start?

The allegation that video games can cause violence in adolescents has been around for at least two decades and probably started in the 1990's, when video games were criticized by parents, religious leaders and most vocal of all the president of the United States at the time George Bush and then Bill Clinton. So how much truth was there to their concerns?

The truth of video games and violence in adolescents.

There have been numerous studies done to find out if violence and video games are connected. There is no conclusive evidence that says that video games and violence are connected, these claims are substantiated by these facts:

Federal crime statistics suggest that serious violent crimes among youths have decreased since 1996, even though video game sales have soared and continue to soar, also this was at the height of the anti-video game rhetoric.

A study done on violent offenders in jail had found that very few of the offenders had played video games in their lives, instead many researchers point to bullying as the catalyst for many violent offenders, the problem with this is that many bullied children turn to video games as a form of escapism and when bullied children do turn violent, the bullying is ignored and the video games are seen as the problem.

All of the accusations of video games in my opinion comes from an older generation not understanding youth and not wanting to, because it's easier to blame new technology rather than try to understand it. The older generation also don't want to make any changes to the school system to stop bullying maybe because they see it as a way to grow up tough and not let their children become weak.
